In the heart of Washington and Hancock Counties, the true Maine wilderness doesn't reveal itself to those who stick to the pavement. It belongs to those willing to paddle across a glacial lake, hike through the blueberry barrens to a hidden kettle pond, or navigate a frozen forest by snowmobile.

TRIP DETAILS

The Setting

Williams Pond is a place where time slows down. Surrounded by boggy tributaries and dense Maine timber, this spring-fed pond maintains the cool, high-quality water that wild trout crave. Because of its remote location - accessed via the rugged Beddington CCC roads— - you are more likely to share the water with a resident Moose or a calling Loon than another boat.

The Challenge & Reward

While the pond is known for its beautiful "squaretails," it also plays home to Chain Pickerel, adding an element of surprise to every cast.

  • The Morning Calm: Launch your canoe into the mist to target Brook Trout as they rise for an early hatch.

  • The Evening Rise: As the sun sets over the Narra-guagus River drainage, the pond’s surface comes alive, offering perfect conditions for dry fly enthusiasts or light-tackle anglers.

  • Pristine Quality: Despite the competition from pickerel, the water quality here is exceptional, supporting a healthy population of 10- to 16-inch trout that are as vibrant as the landscape itself.

Trip Highlights

  • Guided Navigation: We handle the complex "Airline" (Route 9) backroads and the final trek to ensure you spend your time fishing, not searching.

  • Native Pursuit: Focus on wild Brook Trout in a setting that feels like a private wilderness.

  • Canoe & Kayak Ease: Our stable, lightweight watercraft are perfectly suited for navigating the pond’s lily-padded inlets and deep spring holes.

Bog Brook FlowageAdventure Details

A Naturalist’s Paradise

As we navigate the winding waterways, keep your eyes on the sky and the shoreline. The flowage is a Focus Area of Statewide Ecological Significance, recognized for its high-value habitat for wading birds and waterfowl. You might spot:

  • Bald Eagles nesting in the towering white pines along the water’s edge.

  • Moose and White-tailed Deer wading in the shallows during the quiet hours of dawn and dusk.

  • Beavers and Otters gliding through the lily pads and brush-lined banks.

The "Water Wolf" Adventure

If you're bringing a rod, prepare for fast-paced action. Bog Brook Flowage is a premier habitat for Chain Pickerel. These aggressive, toothy predators - often called "chainsides" - thrive in the weedy shallows and submerged logs of the flowage. Whether you are casting a topwater frog or a classic spinner, the explosive strike of a pickerel is an experience you won’t soon forget.

What’s Included:

  • Experienced Local Guide: Knowledgeable of the bog, local lure & legends, and the best fishing holes.

  • Stable Paddling Gear: Choice of a classic Old Town Penobscot canoe or Old Town Predator kayak, perfectly suited for navigating narrow channels and weed beds.

  • Wildlife Education: Learn about the unique "shrub-scrub" and emergent wetland types that make this ecosystem so vital.

Trip Preparation:

  • Fishing: A valid Maine Fishing License is required for all anglers 16 and older.

  • Visibility: Polarized sunglasses are highly recommended to help you spot pickerel lurking in the "tea-colored" water.

SIDE OR ALTERNATE EXCURSIONS:

  1. Fill up your water bottle at a nearby mountain spring

  2. Kettle hole pond fishing nearby

  3. Downing Bog Canoe / Kayack Adventure

Clacial Kettle Hole Ponds

The Jewel Box of the Barrens: Kettle Pond Brook Trout

Deep within the vast blueberry barrens of Washington County lies a geological secret: a cluster of sapphire-blue kettle hole ponds carved by the retreat of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Join us for a guided canoe expedition to Pineo, Spectacle, and the Pike Brook Ponds - a collection of remote, spring-fed waters that offer some of the most serene and productive brook trout fishing in Maine.

TRIP DETAILS

The Landscape

The "Barrens" are a landscape of rolling sand plains and low-bush blueberries, but tucked into these glacial depressions are ponds of surprising depth and clarity. Pineo Pond, for instance, is a mere 7 acres but plunges to a staggering 52 feet, providing the cold, oxygenated "refrigeration" that brook trout need to thrive through the summer.

The Experience

Whether you choose a misty morning launch or a sunset paddle, the experience is defined by absolute quiet.

  • Fly Fishing Only: Pineo Pond is the only "Fly Fishing Only" pond in the county, making it a bucket-list destination for purists looking to match a hatch of mayflies or caddis in a prehistoric setting.

  • The "Spectacle" View: Paddle the twin basins of Spectacle Pond, where the steep sandy banks and surrounding eskers make you feel as though you've stepped back 10,000 years.

  • The Pike Brook Duo: East and West Pike Brook Ponds offer intimate, high-action fishing. These are the perfect spots for an evening "rise," where the water's surface comes alive with trout as the sun dips below the ridge.

Trip Highlights

  • The Targeted Pursuit: Focus on wild and stocked Brook Trout in waters famous for their clarity.

  • Glacial Geology: Your guide will explain the formation of the Pineo Ridge delta and the "ice-block" origins of the very ponds you are paddling.

  • Backcountry Access: We handle the navigation of the rugged barrens' roads, ensuring you reach these hidden gems safely and comfortably.

Tackle Recommendations

  • For Pineo (FFO): Elaborate with a Mickey Finn, Royal Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, or a classic Woolly Bugger in olive or black.

  • For the Pike Brook Ponds: Small gold spoons like the Acme Phoebe or a Mepps Aglia spinner are deadly for those using light spinning tackle.

Step onto the barrens and into a world of hidden waters.

Tilden Pond Adventure

The Path Less Paddled: Spring River to Tilden Pond

For the adventurer who believes the best fishing is found just beyond the reach of the main road, this "pond-hopping" expedition offers the perfect blend of Maine’s iconic landscapes. Our journey begins at the Spring River Lake boat launch, where we set out across crystal-clear waters framed by the rugged silhouettes Catherine’s Mountain, Tunk Mountain, and McCabe Mountain.

BOOK TILDEN POND

TRIP DETAILS

The Route

After a scenic paddle across Spring River Lake, we’ll beach the canoes for a transition into the wild. We trade the paddle for the trail on a brief but rewarding 0.75-mile hike. This forested path serves as a natural gateway, filtering out the noise of the world as we move deeper into the backcountry toward our true destination: Tilden Pond.

The Destination

Tilden Pond is a hidden jewel, a remote trout sanctuary where the ripples are more likely caused by a rising brook trout than another boat. Because of its "hike-in" status, Tilden offers a rare, high-pressure-free fishing environment. We’ll spend the afternoon drifting across this quiet water, casting into the shadows of the shoreline and enjoying the profound silence of the Maine woods.

Trip Highlights

  • Dual-Water Adventure: Experience the expansive beauty of Spring River Lake and the intimate seclusion of Tilden Pond in one day.

  • Remote Angling: Targeted fishing for brook trout in a pond that rarely sees a line.

  • Lightweight Trekking: We handle the logistics of getting the gear to the remote pond so you can focus on the scenery
